Fishing
Report from Tillamook, Oregon
|
April 22, 2008 Fishing report brought to you courtesy of Rob Russell: Winter steelhead continue to show in good numbers on the Wilson and Nestucca Rivers. Most fish are wild-broodstock hatchery fish, and almost all are females heavy with eggs. A handful of spring Chinook and summer steelhead have been caught, but there are very few in the rivers. Jigs and plugs have been equally effective, though some days the fish seem to prefer one over the other. Many people are fishing bait and having success, but I urge anglers to avoid the use of bait until early to mid May to avoid killing wild steelhead, cutthroat trout, and out-migrating juveniles. This may be the last week for decent winter steelhead fishing. Spring Chinook will start showing in fishable numbers in early May, peaking in early June. Summer steelhead will start to show up in good numbers by mid-May and continue through July. Here’s a photo from last season showing two coastal springers landed side by side. A great way to end the day! Thank you, Rob and good fishing to all, Marilyn
